How we tested these Chinese mini PCs?
We spend a lot of our time on benchmark testing and real-world usability in order to really get an idea of how well each mini PC performs, what types of uses they’re best suited for, what sort of performance capabilities you can expect from different price ranges etc.
That’s why we invest hours into publishing hands-on reviews that clearly explain the features and overall capability of each product we cover, whether it’s the best budget mini PC on the market or a cutting edge high-end one.
How reliable are Chinese Mini-PCs?
PCs are only as good as the components used to build them, and this stands true for Chinese Mini-PCs as well. The quality of the motherboard can determine how good a PC is and the majority of mini-PC brands based out of China depend on heavy players such as Intel, AMD and the likes for the supply of processors.
That said, the technology used in them are completely reliable and are highly unlikely to cause concerns for you after purchase. However, it is important to identify your requirements before purchasing a mini-computer. For example, if you have gaming requirements, an Intel Atom processor will be insufficient and you will need an Intel Core i5 processor or higher.
Likewise, if you manage large amounts of data, you will require an SSD or NVMe hard disk in place of an HDD one. As for the build and connectors/ports used, the quality may vary but that is not much to worry about since the mini-PCs are not portable units and aren’t subject to durable usage.
More often than not, Chinese products are associated with cheap prices – and it is tied to the common misconception that good products aren’t available for cheap. Besides quality, many factors play a role in the pricing of a product; infrastructure, logistics, economic policies of a country, etc. and Chinese brands take good advantage of it. For Example, Intel has a manufacturing facility within China, and these cut import and logistic costs drastically.
Brands, especially those available on AliExpress, keep a global customer base in mind while selling their products. This means that they plan and provide options for shipping and other technical requirements that are suitable for different countries. For instance, wall outlets vary in power ratings and types from country to country, and manufacturers account for this by providing a choice or variation in your order or provide sufficient info to ensure that it is not a problem for you.
With the increase in e-commerce dependency, there are more and more buyers in the market to call out fake and fraudulent sellers. Buyers are also protected by sites such as Amazon or AliExpress, where you will be able to return purchases and avoid having to use faulty or damaged products. However, to avoid trouble, you should do your research before purchasing a product. Any brand looking to build its value responds positively to feedback, and also use marketing tools like websites and blogs for good measure.
To sum it up, here are a few pointers you can follow before purchasing a mini-PC online:
- What is the intended usage? (Office use, personal use or gaming use)
- What are the specs required for your intended usage? (Ex. Min. 4GB RAM and 512GB Memory)
- Filter out mini-PCs that don’t meet these requirements
- Make a list of potential PCs and read reviews on them, also contact sellers if required with questions or doubts you may have
- Check for any additional add-ons you require (Ex. HDMI splitter, power outlet convertor, keyboard mouse, etc.)
- Determine shipping terms and fees, watch out for hidden charges and place your order
What is a Barebones Mini PC? How is it different from a Ready to Go PC?
A Barebones PC is basically a PC that is half constructed with a motherboard and the basic graphics card. A ready to go PC is a fully functional PC that is built with certain specs. A Barebones Mini PC can be configured based on whatever specs you want.
What is the use of a mini PC?
Here are a list of basic functions you can run with a Mini PC
- Web browsing using a browser like Chrome
- Using Word Documents and Excel
- Audio and Video functions
- Basic computer tasks with a desktop setup
- A computer setup that is cheap and affordable compared to a laptop
- A portable computer setup
What are Stick PC’s and are they worth it?
Stick PC’s are quite different from Mini PCs. Stick PC’s are basically OS’ within a pen drive without any computing power. So you can literally carry around your OS and the files in a pen drive. This isn’t really useful for the average user.
Are Chinese mini PCs good?
Mini PC’s are perfect for performing day to day tasks that don’t require too much firepower. So why buy a Mini PC? A Mini PC is portable very easily and it does give you computing power that can be connected to a bigger desktop display. Also a lot of the Mini PC’s out there are WAY cheaper compared to the laptops out there. So a Mini PC is the best of both worlds. Affordable desktop computing at a fraction of the cost.
Can you game on a mini PC?
You cannot game on a Mini PC. Mini PC’s aren’t built for gaming. BUT, it depends on the game. There are some Mini PC’s that are dedicated for gaming. The truth of the matter is, even the PC’s you buy off the shelves aren’t capable of playing different types of games and it requires customizations. So yes, you can game on Mini PC’s, but only a few games.
What’s the difference between a mini PC and a desktop?
A Mini PC vs a Desktop
A Mini PC is basically a small PC that is connected with a desktop screen to let you perform basic computing tasks at a lesser price.
Features | Mini PC | Desktop |
Computing Power | A Mini PC definitely does not pack any computing power compared to a desktop. Except the Intel IUC, which has a bit of power | A desktop clearly wins, because it can be customized to have ANY power that the user requires. If you are looking for computing power, get a desktop. |
Gaming / Graphics | A Mini PC is not built for Gaming and Graphics like Photoshop and Illustrator. But some Mini PC’s do have the capabilities. | If you are looking to game or use graphics software, a desktop is your best bet. |
Portability | A Mini PC is super portable. This is one of the biggest advantages of a mini PC, it can be carried anywhere and anyhow! | A Desktop can’t be carried with ease and if that’s a factor for you, then choose a mini PC. |
Budget and Cost | If budget is a major factor, then a Mini PC is hands down the best option because it’s cheaper than a desktop. | A desktop can be budget friendly, but it can never be as cheap as a Mini PC! |
Basic Functions | If you are looking to use a PC with basic functions, a Mini PC wins | If you want a desktop only for basic functions, then it’s a waste of money! |
Things to consider when choosing a mini PC
Mini PCs come in two variants, fully ready to go or skeleton kits.
Skeleton kits come only with the motherboard and CPU, these kits will not have a hard disk and RAM installed to give more flexibility.
A ready to go model includes all hardware and even an operating system, this type of mini PC is ready to use straight out of the box.
Whichever you decide on getting, a keyboard, mouse and monitor will have to be purchased separately, although you can use old ones if you already have them, make sure they are USB ones, a monitor with an hdmi input would be preferable.
The CPU cannot be upgraded later like the RAM and hard disk so get the best you can to start with.
It should be noted that these mini PCs support only laptop RAMs and not desktop ones.
AMD processors currently out do Intel ones when it comes to mini PCs but it’s a personal choice.
Decide on which operating system you would like and look for a mini PC that comes with or has the option to install what you want.
And importantly if you are looking to game as well then a mini PC is not a good idea, even the best do not run new games well.
Keeping all this in mind and your budget look for what you want.
